Guest Spot – Matilda Wing

15 year old Matilda Wing has been doing CrossFit with us since December. She also attended our Summer Camp last year. She is a keen gymnast who had never done any type of barbell work before joining CrossFit. She can now clean 45kg, squat 40kg and deadlift 65kg for reps! Plenty more to come from this strong lady in the future.

Here’s a little bit about her journey in CrossFit so far!

  1. How did you hear about CrossFit?

I first heard about CrossFit through my mum, because she had signed me up for one of the camps last summer. All she said was “you’re doing a fitness camp by the way”, so I hadn’t really known what to expect!

  1. Were you nervous about joining at first?

When my mum told me that I was doing a fitness camp I was terrified…I don’t really like new people and socialising wouldn’t be my most favourite thing in the world. So I hadn’t really known what to expect because I had never done a camp like it before so that made me nervous.

  1. What’s your favourite thing about coming to CrossFit each week?

My favourite thing about coming to CrossFit each week would have to be the atmosphere. Everyone is really friendly and encouraging in French Vanoli. CrossFit has really helped with my severe stress and anxiety and has helped me gain confidence.

  1. You recently completed your Junior Cert. Did you find training during those 2 weeks helped with your study?

It was a busy couple of weeks but as busy as it was, I always went to training. Training made it easier to study and helped my week go by fast because I looked forward to it each week.

  1. What are your favourite and least favourite thing about CrossFit?

My favourite thing is the feeling I get after I workout. There’s something boldly satisfying about being all sweaty and out of breath. As much as it may burn, and you feel like you’re about to die right there on the spot, it’s worth it because it feels good. My least favourite thing is when I look back on my training session and I think “I could have worked harder” or “I was kinda lazy during that class”. It’s not a nice feeling to look back and think you could have put more effort into your training because you don’t feel as satisfied as you do when you work really hard and sweat like crazy.

  1. What’s your biggest achievement so far and do you have any future goals?

My greatest achievement so far would have to be my deadlift. I recently deadlifted 65kg and I am well proud of myself. It took some work to get there but I’m glad I did. My goal would be to be able to do pullups (which I cannot do to save my life!) and I would also like to be able to deadlift 100kg.

  1. What do you enjoy doing in your spare time apart from CrossFit?!

In my spare time I like to do a variety of things. I love reading, writing, drawing and photography. But I also do gymnastics which is very helpful for my flexibility in CrossFit.
